Lillie Road Recreation Ground in Fulham has its first Green Flag, taking the borough to a record 26 award-winning parks. The flag went up on 10 October.

Lillie Road Recreation Ground in Fulham has won a Green Flag award. It is the first time the park has held one, and it takes the borough’s total to 26, the most it has had.

The council announced the award on Wednesday. Friends of the park, residents and councillors raised the flag on Saturday 10 October.

Green Flags are run by the charity Keep Britain Tidy. Each park is judged against a national standard covering care and maintenance, safety, heritage and how it is managed. The council says Lillie Road Rec was assessed independently against that benchmark.

A record year for the borough’s parks

The tally has climbed for three years running. In July 2024 the council listed 21 Green Flag sites. A year later it added four more, taking it to 25:

  • Eelbrook Common, Fulham
  • Marcus Garvey Park, Hammersmith
  • St Paul’s Church and Open Space, Hammersmith
  • Vicarage Gardens, Fulham

Lillie Road Rec is the 26th. Other Fulham holders include Bishops Park, Hurlingham Park, Parsons Green, South Park and William Parnell Park, known locally as Pineapple Park.

Cllr Bora Kwon, the Cabinet Member for Environment, Arts and Culture, raised the flag with the Friends group. “Having these spaces independently reviewed and celebrated shows that the experts agree,” she said. She credited volunteers and Friends groups with helping to care for them.

The Mayor, Cllr Sharon Holder, and Cllr Nicole Trehy, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Travel, also attended.

Jenny’s Corner

The park is home to Jenny’s Corner, a community garden in memory of Dr Jenny Vaughan OBE. She was a consultant neurologist and a former councillor, and died in March 2024 aged 55.

The garden’s own site says volunteers have worked on it since 2023. They took on two neglected borders, one along Lillie Road from the entrance to the gym and one by the basketball courts. Rubbish had to be cleared and overgrown shrubs cut back before planting could start.

The next step is a sensory herb garden with planting chosen for wildlife. The council says it will be open to all residents once finished.

Joan, the Fulham gardener who came up with the idea, said the group was “delighted and surprised” by the award. She said the ground had hosted plenty of sport but few activities for less able people. “Jenny’s Corner means an inclusive community and a healthy environment,” she said.
