Studdridge Street and its side streets are shut for gas works, Dawes Road closes 17 to 19 October, and the District line is off on 24 and 25 October.

The Piccadilly line stops at Hammersmith on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October. The weekend after, 24 and 25 October, there is no District line through the borough at all, and the Mildmay line is shut north of Shepherd’s Bush on the Saturday night. On the roads, a gas and water programme is closing Studdridge Street and the streets off it in Sands End, and Wood Lane has long-running lane closures from Glenroy Street to Shepherd’s Bush.

Updated 11 October: the District line closure of 10 and 11 October has been removed now that it has passed. Road entries are from the council’s bulletin for the week commencing 10 October, and TfL’s closures were rechecked the same day.

This weekend: the Piccadilly, 17 and 18 October

From 01:00 on Saturday 17 October and all day Sunday 18 October, including the Night Tube, there is no Piccadilly service between Hammersmith and Heathrow or Uxbridge. Trains still run east of Hammersmith, through Barons Court and Earl’s Court. TfL says use the Elizabeth line for Heathrow and the Metropolitan line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, and replacement buses run.

The District line is also shut that weekend between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway, which is outside the borough. Ravenscourt Park, Stamford Brook and the Fulham branch keep their District trains. TfL’s data shows no planned closures on the Hammersmith and City or Central lines that weekend.

The District shuts on 24 and 25 October

TfL’s line status data shows no District service between Edgware Road or Embankment and Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond or Wimbledon on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October. That takes in every District stop in this borough:

  • Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green and Putney Bridge on the Wimbledon branch
  • West Kensington, Barons Court and Hammersmith
  • Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook
  • the Kensington (Olympia) shuttle

The usual fallback is weaker this time. From 19:30 on the Saturday until 12:00 on the Sunday there is no Mildmay line between Willesden Junction and Shepherd’s Bush, and no Southern trains between Watford Junction and Shepherd’s Bush. TfL says use bus routes 220 and 228. Mildmay trains between Shepherd’s Bush and Clapham Junction, through Kensington (Olympia) and Imperial Wharf, run a reduced service over the same hours. The Circle is shut between Edgware Road and Tower Hill via Victoria.

For Fulham Broadway and Parsons Green that weekend, the nearest alternatives are the Mildmay line at Imperial Wharf or a bus to Hammersmith for the Piccadilly, Hammersmith and City or Central lines.

Further ahead: TfL shows the whole Piccadilly line closed from 01:00 on Saturday 31 October and all day Sunday 1 November, including the Night Tube. That shuts Hammersmith and Barons Court to Piccadilly trains.

Barons Court: westbound trains still do not stop

TfL’s station disruption feed, checked on 11 October, still says westbound trains have not called at Barons Court since Monday 6 July, and will not “until November”, while the 1904 station is repaired. Its live status line puts it more loosely, as “until late 2026”. Travelling westbound from the station, take an eastbound train and change at West Kensington on the District or Earl’s Court on the Piccadilly. Travelling westbound to it, carry on to Hammersmith and come back.

The roads this week and next

The council’s weekly Network Activity Bulletin, for the week commencing Saturday 10 October, lists 112 works in its main table, 53 of them full road closures. These are the entries that affect the most people. All dates are permitted dates.

Sands End, a long gas and water programme. Cadent Gas and Thames Water both hold full road closures on Studdridge Street, between Wandsworth Bridge Road and Peterborough Road, from 5 October. Thames Water’s permit runs to 7 December 2026; the bulletin prints Cadent’s as 7 December 2027, which may be a typing error. The side streets close in turn, each where it joins Studdridge Street. This week’s bulletin brings Chipstead Street forward a week and adds Quarrendon Street:

Street Closed Works by
Bowerdean Street 5 to 26 October Cadent Gas
Perrymead Street 5 to 26 October Cadent Gas and Thames Water
Chipstead Street 12 October to 9 November Cadent Gas
Chiddingstone Street 26 October to 16 November Cadent Gas
Quarrendon Street 26 October to 16 November Cadent Gas
Bradbourne Street 2 to 30 November Cadent Gas
Coniger Road 9 to 30 November Cadent Gas

Fulham.

  • Munster Road and Lillie Road: G Network multi-way signals at the Lillie Road junction and from Lillie Road to Chaldon Road, 12 to 15 October, then at Danehurst Street and Reporton Road from 13 to 16 October, and at Kingwood Road and Orbain Road from 19 to 22 October. Thames Water adds signals outside No.318 on 17 October, then closes Munster Road outside No.5 from 26 to 30 October.
  • Dawes Road: closed from 17 to 19 October, with Cadent connecting a main and G Network working from the Munster Road junction. Thames Water two-way signals outside No.10a follow from 29 October to 1 November.
  • New King’s Road outside No.391: Thames Water road closure, 28 to 30 October.
  • Fulham Road outside No.712: Thames Water multi-way signals, 20 to 23 October.
  • Bagley’s Lane: G Network multi-way signals, 21 to 30 October.
  • Star Road: Cadent multi-way signals, 19 October to 2 November.
  • Lillie Road, North End Road to Earls Court Walk: a road closure from 4 to 7 November has been applied for but not yet granted.

Shepherd’s Bush, White City and Hammersmith.

  • Wood Lane: the council holds lane closures in both directions from the Glenroy Street junction to the Uxbridge Road junction, from 26 August to 30 July 2027. Central island works by No.191 to No.201, just before the A40, are now booked for 26 October to 6 November.
  • Uxbridge Road and Shepherd’s Bush Green: new council lane closures at the Wood Lane junction and outside No.65 Shepherd’s Bush Green, both from 7 October to 30 July 2027. Convoy working, where a vehicle leads traffic through, continues at the Shepherd’s Bush Green Road junction until 30 October.
  • Hammersmith Grove is closed from No.244A to the Goldhawk Road junction until 17 October. A lane closure between No.40 and No.26-28 runs from 12 to 31 October, then a road closure on the same stretch from 26 October to 21 November.
  • Shepherd’s Bush Road: road closure, 26 to 28 October.
  • Goldhawk Road opposite Pennard Road: Thames Water two-way signals until 24 October, with Pennard Road closed at the junction for the same period. BT has a lane closure outside No.293 to No.295 from 13 to 15 October.
  • Du Cane Road: TfL two-way signals until 28 February.

Wormholt and Old Oak. Cadent’s gas mains work continues. Wormholt Road is closed from No.6 until 26 October, and Aldbourne Road is closed at the Wormholt Road junction until 24 October. Steventon Road and Sawley Road are closed until 16 October.

What we could confirm from TfL’s road disruption data on 11 October: the A40 Westway westbound, between Edgware Road and the Northern Roundabout, is still down to two lanes for infrastructure inspection works, to 5 December.

The bridges

Wandsworth Bridge. Wandsworth Council, which owns the works, still had not named the nights for the overnight closure on its scheme page when we checked on 7 October. The page, last updated on 3 September, says the bridge will close 9pm to 5am for about a week towards the end of the programme, “date to be confirmed”. The works are expected to finish at the end of October, weather permitting, and two-way traffic runs in the daytime. Out-of-hours queries go to the contractor, FM Conway, on 01732 600 888, and daytime ones to Wandsworth on 020 8871 6000.

The scheme covers:

  • deck repair and waterproofing beneath the footway
  • a new stepped cycle track on each side of the bridge
  • wider, resurfaced footways on both sides
  • junction and bus stop improvements at Jews Row
  • new contraflow cycling on Jews Row
  • full resurfacing of the carriageway at the end of the programme

The northbound bus lane and the carriageway cycle lane are suspended for the duration.

Hammersmith Bridge is closed to motor traffic, as it has been since 2020. It is open to pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair and e-scooter users, and the main carriageway reopened to them in April 2025 after a £2.9 million redecking paid for by the Department for Transport. The council says it has spent £48 million on the bridge since August 2020, and the DfT has granted £4.7 million for work on the hangers that connect the deck to the suspension chains. The council’s bridge page, checked on 7 October, gives no reopening date for cars. It says the council has bid to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund for a second phase of critical repairs and strengthening, needed to keep the bridge open to people on foot and bike and to river traffic below.

Albert Bridge is closed to vehicles, and it is not in this borough. It crosses between Chelsea and Battersea, about two miles east of Wandsworth Bridge. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea closed it in February after an inspector found a cracked cast iron component. Its latest update, dated 23 February, says a full repair can be done within a year and gives no reopening date. It matters here because it pushes more cars onto the crossings this borough does use.

Matchday road closures, all season

The council’s bulletin for the week commencing 10 October carries the three stadium closures, all running from 1 August 2026 to 31 May 2027. These are matchday closures rather than continuous ones:

  • Craven Cottage, Fulham FC: Bishops Park Road, Finlay Street, Fulham Palace Road and Stevenage Road
  • Stamford Bridge, Chelsea FC: Fulham Broadway, Fulham Road and Wansdown Place
  • Loftus Road, QPR: South Africa Road, Bloemfontein Road, Loftus Road, Ellerslie Road and Dorando Close

Key routes, and what to do instead

Four roads carry almost everything here, and all four are Transport for London’s rather than the council’s. They are the A4 through Hammersmith, the A40 Westway across the north, the A3220 West Cross Route down the eastern edge, and West Cromwell Road into Kensington. The council maintains everything else.

  • Crossing the river. Putney Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge are the only road crossings from this borough. Wandsworth Bridge stays open in the day, with works expected to finish at the end of October.
  • East to west. The A4 through Hammersmith is the through route, and the flyover skips the Broadway gyratory. It has no exit for Fulham, so for anywhere south of the Broadway come off at the roundabout and take Fulham Palace Road.
  • North to south inside the borough. There is no good road route. Wood Lane, Shepherd’s Bush Road, Fulham Palace Road and North End Road are the chain, and one of them is almost always dug up. The 220 bus runs the whole length and is usually faster than driving it.
  • Parking at a station. No tube station in the borough has a car park, and the streets around Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green and Hammersmith are controlled parking zones in the working day. See parking in Fulham for the zones and hours.
  • Clean Air Neighbourhood. South Fulham has camera-enforced through-traffic restrictions, and both schemes north of Wandsworth Bridge are now permanent. If you are driving into the streets between Wandsworth Bridge Road and the river and you are not a permit holder, check the council’s Clean Air Neighbourhood page before you set off rather than after the penalty notice arrives.

How to check before you travel

The council’s weekly bulletin is the most complete source. It is a PDF, linked from the H&F roadworks page, and a new one goes up each week. It lists proposed works as well as current ones, which is the part most traffic maps miss. Last week’s file is taken down when the new one appears, so save it if you need it. For live conditions on the four TfL roads, use TfL’s road status.

One caveat applies to every date on this page. A permitted end date is a permission, not a promise. Utility works overrun routinely and the bulletin reissues weekly with revised dates. Where a closure matters to you, check the current week’s bulletin rather than trusting the date you read here.

If your journey is by rail, our tube times and fares page has the journey times and what they cost. Roadworks and river crossings feed straight into what people pay for the streets around them, and the White City and Fulham growth areas explain why Wood Lane is being rebuilt.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Piccadilly line closed in October?

West of Hammersmith on 17 and 18 October, and the whole line on 31 October and 1 November. From 01:00 on Saturday 17 October and all day Sunday 18 October there is no Piccadilly service between Hammersmith and Heathrow or Uxbridge. Trains still run east of Hammersmith through Barons Court and Earl’s Court. From 01:00 on Saturday 31 October and all day Sunday 1 November there is no Piccadilly service on the entire line.

Is the District line closed on 24 and 25 October?

Yes. TfL’s line status data shows no District service between Edgware Road and Embankment and Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond and Wimbledon on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, and the Mildmay line is also shut between Willesden Junction and Shepherd’s Bush on the Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Is Wandsworth Bridge closed at night?

Not yet on a confirmed date. Wandsworth Council says the bridge closes 9pm to 5am for about a week towards the end of the works, but its page still gave the date as to be confirmed on 7 October. The bridge is open to two-way traffic in the daytime and the works are due to finish at the end of October.

Is Studdridge Street closed?

Yes. Cadent Gas and Thames Water both hold permits to close Studdridge Street, between Wandsworth Bridge Road and Peterborough Road, from 5 October, with Thames Water’s running to 7 December. Bowerdean Street and Perrymead Street are closed where they meet it until 26 October, Chipstead Street from 12 October, and Chiddingstone, Quarrendon, Bradbourne and Coniger follow into November, according to the council’s bulletin for the week commencing 10 October.

Why do trains not stop at Barons Court?

The 1904 station is being repaired. Westbound trains have not called there since 6 July and will not until November, according to TfL. Going westbound from the station, take an eastbound train and change at West Kensington on the District or Earl’s Court on the Piccadilly.

Is Hammersmith Bridge open?

Not to motor traffic, and it has not been since 2020. It is open to pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair and e-scooter users. We have seen no reopening date for cars.

Where can I find the official Hammersmith and Fulham roadworks list?

The council publishes a Network Activity Bulletin as a PDF every week on its roadworks page. It covers utility works, the council’s own highway schemes and proposed future works. Only the current week’s file stays online.

Which roads in the borough does the council not control?

The A4 (Talgarth Road, Great West Road and Hammersmith Flyover), the A40 Westway, West Cromwell Road and the A3220 West Cross Route are all Transport for London’s. Problems on those go to TfL, not the council.

Correction, 6 September 2026: an earlier version of this page said Wandsworth Bridge would close fully for ten days from 21 September, reading the H&F bulletin’s permit window as a continuous closure. Wandsworth Council, which owns the works, says the bridge closes overnight only, 9pm to 5am, for about a week, with the date still to be confirmed. The page has been corrected.

Roadworks change weekly and permitted end dates move. Check the current bulletin before relying on any date here.
